November 2011

november 28

snug. comfortable. warm.

…another side of this time of year…a sort-of balance to the crystalline, bare-limbed, star-dappled side. I don’t know quite which side I was experiencing tonight as I lit a simple candle for my seven-year-old nephew, to honor the first Sunday in Advent…read the snowy, hushed story Owl Moon together…exchanged good-nights and endearments in the candlelit darkness…breathed a few long breaths with him and heard his breathing grow slow and regular…then left him with a kiss in his upturned palm…
…a bit of both, I think. The best sort of moments.

…for me…Advent begins slowly…aware of the misty, spare quality of late November…
…bright leaves mostly gone…all feels nicely bare and clean-swept…and I will spend the first few days bringing the same feeling to my home…before we begin adding the rich and lustrous layers as Christmas draws nearer…
